Former Sunderland forward David Rush says Martin O'Neill should bring in Grant Holt and Jermain Defoe to form a new strike partnership.
Norwich striker Holt was linked with Sunderland earlier in the summer but has since signed a new contract after Chris Hughton was appointed as manager.
Defoe endured a frustrating recent campaign at Tottenham Hotspur, finding himself on the substitutes bench.
Rush says that he sees the combination of a target-man like Holt and smaller striker Defoe with third forward Stephane Sessegnon playing 'behind' would make Sunderland a more potent force in the Premier League.
