Reid received the news that both Alan Shearer and Duncan Ferguson had been dropped by Gullit in the game that Sunderland went on to win 2-1.
Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips scored for Reid’s side on the night after Kieron Dyer had given the home side the lead.
Reid recalls looking towards the subs bench, seeing Shearer and Ferguson and thinking “I’m glad they’re not on the pitch”.
Reid managed Sunderland between 1995 and 2002 and oversaw two famous victories at St James’ Park in that time.
The former Sunderland manager also backs his old side to win the next Wear-Tyne derby on October 21.
The 147th Wear-Tyne derby will be live on Sky Sports HD1 from 1pm Sunday.
