Speaking after handing handing out medals at the Great North Run, Miliband praised the club's squad and the 'solid' start they have made.
In their most recent game, Sunderland drew 1-1 with Liverpool after a Luis Suarez strike cancelled out a third goal in two games from Fletcher.
The result keeps Martin O'Neill's side unbeaten so far this season after three consecutive Premier League draws and a win in the League Cup over Morecambe and Miliband sees a positive future at the Stadium of Light now the season is underway.
Sunderland travel to newly promoted West Ham United on September 22.
The two sides have not met since the final game of the 2010/11 season when a 3-0 victory for Sunderland secured a tenth place finish in the Premier League.
