Martin O’Neill completed deals for both Adam Johnson and Steven Fletcher on Friday August 24.
Fletcher cost £12m from Wolves while the fee for Johnson was undisclosed.
McCarthy is a former Sunderland manager and signed Fletcher from Burnley two years ago.
Speaking on ‘Goals on Sunday’ McCarthy said that Fletcher has the ability to “lead the line” for Sunderland and could play for a ‘top four side’.
Jordan added that Fletcher’s all-round play could also be complemented by Johnson’s creativity.
