Johnson attended the academy from the age of 5 and spent several years under the eye of Brian before the professional clubs came calling.
Also in attendance at East Durham College was Johnson's uncle, Freddie Welsh, who was watching his nephew and Johnson's cousin Evan.
Freddie is delighted to have his nephew back in the North East and said: 'Adam has come home, this is where he belongs and should be playing football.'
Johnson was initially picked up by Newcastle United from Brian's academy but switched to Middlesbrough at an early age where he was to make his name.
A transfer to Manchester City in 2010 followed for Johnson where he went on to win the Premier League and the FA Cup.He joined Sunderland on August 24 and Welsh revealed that after moving to the Stadium of Light, his nephew has joined the club he has always supported.
