Martin O’Neill’s return to his former side ended in defeat thanks to Tom Parkes’ 72nd minute goal.
In a game when O’Neill experimented with players introducing a number of his younger squad members to the side, Sunderland did have chances to level and win the game.
City were the better side in the early exchanges but did not trouble Sunderland goalkeeper Keiren Westwood before half-time.
Parkes’ goal came from a corner as the ball found the substitute who beat Westwood from six yards.
O’Neill’s side almost equalised eight minutes later when James McClean’s header from Larsson’s free-kick hit the bar and appeared to cross the line.
The goal was not given though and Sunderland fell to their fourth defeat of pre-season.
O’Neill’s side begin their Premier League campaign next weekend with a trip away to Arsenal.
