Swede Sebastian Larsson took his place in a strong Sunderland line-up which included Carlos Cuellar following his return from injury, while keeper Simon Mignolet was named among the substitutes.
Mignolet did get on the pitch for the second half, but will have been disappointed to concede two goals.
On 70 minutes, Helsingsborgs opened the scoring, Alfred Finnbogason unleashing a 25-yard shot which went in off the post.
Just two minutes later, Mignolet was picking the ball out of his goal again, after substitute May Mahlangu fired home from close range.
Sunderland continue their preparations for the new season when they visit Derby County on Wednesday.
