The former Burnley forward has been linked with a move to Wearside throughout the summer.
He was Wolves top scorer last season with 12 goals as Wanderers were relegated from the Premier League.
If Sunderland match Wolves’ asking price of £10m it would be the third biggest transfer in the club’s history.
They have only spent more on Asamoah Gyan (£13m) and Darren Bent (£12m)
