The ‘Elite Player Performance Plan’ (EPPP) is designed to improve the development of young players.
Sunderland are one of 12 clubs to have their initial status graded.
Category One is the top grade that can be awarded to clubs and is based on productivity rates; training facilities; and coaching, education and welfare provisions.
The award is based on the clubs’ abilities to increase the number and quality of hope-grown players in the long term.
The concept is based on creating more time for young players to play and be coached.
The Academy of Light has produced a number of players over the years who have gone on to represent the first team.
Recent graduates include England international midfielder Jordan Henderson who moved to Liverpool in 2011 for £20m and Jack Colback who has recently become a first-team regular.
