Connor Wickham had given the Wearsiders an eighth minute lead when he pounced amid a goalmouth scramble following a corner to tap home at close range.
The Dutch side had controlled much of the opening period and they were rewarded eight minutes before the break when Hyun Jun Suk netted with a wonderful acrobatic effort.
And Groningen snatched the lead on 43 minutes when winger Mitchell Schet cut in from the right and steered a low shot into the net.
Sunderland levelled the game with just two minutes remaining when Campbell met a delivery from Craig Gardner inside the six-yard box.
Groningen should have sealed victory in the dying seconds, but substitute Genero Zeefuik missed an open goal.
And the Black Cats still had time to complete their comeback when Noble raced onto a long ball and the substitute volleyed home from 25 yards.
