Kevin Ball will take over Sunderand's reserve and under-21 squad

Sunderland have appointed former captain Kevin Ball as ‘senior professional development coach.

Ball will have responsibility for the club’s reserve and under-21 squads.

He takes over from Keith Bertschin and Steven Clemence who have left the clubto join up with former Sunderland manager Steve Bruce at Hull City.

Ball had been the assistant Academy manager taking care of the under-18 side.

He also had a brief spell in charge of the first-team as caretaker manager in 2006.

Newly appointed Craig Liddle will take over from Ball as coach of the under-18s.
