Former Sunderland Captain Kevin Ball On Playing Against Newcastle

In that time he experienced promotion, relegation the club’s highest ever Premier League finish and has also managed the club on an interim basis.

But, he says that few games in his career have meant more to him than representing Sunderland in matches against Newcastle.

In his long spell with the club, he made 340 appearances and won, lost and drew numerous derby games.

He is best remembered though for hitting his own cross-bar after a tackle 18 yards from his own goal that would have been an equaliser for Newcastle in a game that Sunderland went on to win 2-1 in 1999.
