Improving Consett erased a two-goal deficit to earn a valuable point on Wearside which enabled them to consolidate a sixth-from-bottom rating, eight points above Jarrow Roofing who occupy the last relegation position.
The Wearsiders, challenging for the title, made an excellent start, scoring twice in the opening 19 minutes.
Following good work by Brian Close and Andrew Jennings, Marc Walton slotted past goalkeeper Peter Jameson.
Shortly afterwards, Jennings was brought down and Glen Robson stepped forward to beat Jameson from the spot.
Midway through the opening half, David Scorer reduced the deficit with a fine solo effort and after David Wells went close for RCA, the Steelmen equalised just before the interval as Anthony Lund evaded a number of tackles before slipping the ball past keeper Neil Atkinson.
In the second period, Michael Mackay fired wide for Consett and only a splendid save by Jameson kept his side level.
SUNDERLAND RCA: Atkinson, Jones, McGuinness, Paxton, Beasley, Close, Walton (Shields), Berj, Jennings, Robson (McLeod), Wells (Oates). Man of Match Paxton.
CONSETT: Jamieson, Bell, Brown, Burrell, Scorer, Piecha, Slocombe, Lund, Malloy (Stanger), Mackay, Davies. Man of Match Jamieson.
