FA Charged Over 'Improper Conduct' Of England Under 21 Players In Race Row Match In Serbia

European football's governing body Uefa has charged the Football Association (FA) over the "improper conduct" of its players after a match in which Sunderland defender Danny Rose was taunted with monkey chants.

The charge follows the under 21s match against Serbia which saw the England team subjected to alleged racist abuse.

The FA has raised the prospect of a future boycott of matches in Serbia after Tuesday night's game in Krusevac.

Uefa also charged the Serbian FA with alleged racist chanting by fans as well as over the behaviour of its players at the end of the stormy encounter.

A YouTube clip filmed at the game appears to show monkey chants taking place after the final whistle, during a fracas in which England player Danny Rose was shown a red card.

Prime Minister David Cameron has said he was "appalled" at the ugly scenes at the end of the match.

The Government is giving its full backing to the FA's complaint of racist taunts, and sport minister Hugh Robertson has written to Uefa president Michel Platini urging an investigation.

Rose complained of racist abuse, including monkey chants, during the Euro 2013 play-off and said he was also hit by missiles thrown from the crowd.

The Sunderland defender, who is on loan from Tottenham, was sent off after the final whistle for kicking a ball in anger as scuffles broke out involving Serbian supporters, players and officials.

The Serbian FA has denied any form of racism occurred and said Rose behaved in an "inappropriate, unsportsmanlike and vulgar manner" towards their fans.

In a statement on its website, the Serbian FA said: "(The) FA of Serbia absolutely refuses (sic) and denies that there were any occurrences of racism before and during the match at the stadium in Krusevac."

But Rose told Sky Sports News: "I remember getting slapped twice and then I got ushered away. That's when I kicked the ball - and the referee sent me off. I don't understand, the game had finished by then but he still sent me off for kicking the ball.

"As I went off again there was monkey chanting, but the monkey chanting started long before I got sent off. After 60 minutes my head wasn't really on the game. They have to be banned. I don't understand how else they can learn from it, they have to be banned."

Uefa said in a statement: "Regarding alleged racist chanting, Uefa will instigate proceedings against the FSS over the misconduct of their supporters during and at the end of the match. Proceedings will also be instigated against the FSS for the improper conduct of the Serbia players at the end of the match.

"Uefa will also commence proceedings against the FA for the improper conduct of the England players at the end of the match.

"These cases will be discussed on the occasion of the next ordinary hearing of the Uefa Control and Disciplinary Body on November 22 2012."
