Newcastle Falcons underlined their promotion credentials once again with a 53-10 victory over Leeds Carnegie on Friday night.

After a very impressive start to the season Dean Richards' players were in no mood to ease off, and ran in seven tries to make it five wins out of five in the Championship.

The Falcons opened the scoring on 14 minutes when Jonny Golding touched down with a drive over try following some great work in the pack. Jimmy Gopperth converted for a 7-0 lead.

Leeds hit back four minutes later thanks to a Joe Ford penalty, before Gopperth replied with a penalty for Falcons to make it 10-3.

Just before half time James Hudson gave Falcons some clear daylight with a well-worked try. Gopperth added the extras to give Richards’ men a 17-3 advantage at the break.

The Falcons went close to their third try with the first meaningful move of the second-half. Luke Fielden was held-up over the line following some neat interplay between Joel Hodgson and Gopperth. Leeds were penalised and Gopperth made no mistake with the penalty for a 20-3 lead.

The Falcons put the result beyond doubt with three converted tries in 15 minutes, with Rob Vickers, Jimmy Gopperth and Luke Fielden going over to make it 39-3.

Leeds got a try back through full back Stevie McColl, but a penalty try and Gopperth's second try of the night rounded off a 53-10 win for Falcons.
