The European Athletics Team Championships will see stars from Team GB take on their European counterparts over two days of competition on June 22 and 23.

It will be the first major athletics meeting since the London Olympics.

Gateshead held the Europa Cup in 1989 and 1998 and the stadium beat off competition from Frankfurt and three other European cities to win the bid to host the games in 2013.

The International Stadium has previously held Diamond League meetings but lost the contract to Birmingham’s Alexandra Stadium in 2010.

World records have been broken at Gateshead in the past.

Most recently, Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell running 9.77 seconds in 2006 and North East distance runner Brendan Foster broke the 3,000m world record in 1974.
