He added: “You’ve done all the hard work, just enjoy it and pace yourself.”

He made the comments at a press conference ahead of the Great North CityGames on the Newcastle Quayside, at which he'll be competing in the two-mile race.

The 29-year-old was due to take part in the Great North Run on September 16, but pulled out due to being exhausted by the recent birth of his twin daughters.

He said: “I would love to take part in the half marathon but unfortunately I’m feeling a bit tired.

“But I’m going to come back next year and compete the half.”

Mo will now be joining other athletes including long jumper Greg Rutherford, in starting the race.

Greg said: “The Great North Run is synonymous with long distance running in this country.

“I’ll be having the pleasure of being one of the guys starting it, which is going to be fantastic.”

The pair added that they will be giving high-fives to runners on the start line.
