Competitions run all weekend in sports such as free-running, BMX and skateboarding.

There will also be a world record attempt by 3sixty professional cycle team on Sunday.

And, medals will be awarded to performers such as dancers, MCs and singers.

Event organiser Michael Evans said: “This is the third Urban Games, and every year it has got bigger.

“It is led by young people and they put the events on for their community. We are part of the London 2012 legacy and very proud of what we do.”

Labour MP for Newcastle Chi Onwurah said: “It is a really great example of how young people are contributing.

“You can feel the atmosphere, it is really positive, everyone is enjoying themselves.”

Events are being held outside the Centre for Life at Times Square and at the Discovery Centre.
