After years without any serious competition in the city, promoter Steve Wraith is aiming to bring the sport back to Newcastle.
"Boxing is a sport Geordies love, but haven't had much of a chance to see over the past few years."
His aim is to bring the sights of the sixties back to the city, when Newcastle was firmly on the boxing map.
He's hoping to give young fighters from the area the opportunity to make a name for themselves.
"I'm the first promoter in Newcastle to try and bring professional boxing back up here, and give the local boxers a chance, and that’s what I’m hoping to do," he said.
One of those youngsters is Akash "Cash" Hussain, who will be top of the bill at Wraith Promotions' first boxing event on September 9 at the O2 Academy.
'Return of the Cash' marks Cash's return to the ring after 18 months out. The former Junior ABA National Champion was left fearing for his future after failing an eye test in 2010.
He had to undergo laser eye surgery before his licence was renewed.
"It was very scary, I thought my career was over," he said. "It was three or four days of agony, but to be able to box again means all that pain was worth it."
Cash thinks his boxing has improved considerably since the procedure, and is looking forward to proving it against Hungary's Acos Dioss in three weeks' time.
"I can tell just from sparring how much better I am now, so I can’t wait to get back."
