Murray finished strongly in a time of 3:52:77, three tenths of a second behind Kenya's Commonwealth Games 1,500m gold medallist Silas Kiplagat.

The 22-year-old, who was born in North Shields but now lives in Twickenham, was ready to quit athletics this time last year, after a string of injuries.

A stress fracture and an achilles problem left Murray depressed and contemplating work as a holiday rep on the Greek island of Zante.

But now he will join Andy Baddeley as Team GB's representatives in the Men's 1,500m at the Olympics in 13 days' time.

After finishing second at the London Grand Prix, Murray told BBC Sport: "I absolutely loved it here today. Coming down the home straight I heard the crowd going nuts, and I knew it was for me. I'm pleased I could put on a show for them.

"I don't know what it will be like in the Olympic Stadium, it's going to be absolutely unbelievable."
