Colombia’s best athletes are preparing for the Olympic games with a training camp in Gateshead.

The team are using facilities at the International Stadium, Gateshead College and Birtley boxing club.

The team are based at the stadium until July 25, two days before the start of the Olympic games.

High jumper Wanner Millar Moreno said: “Gateshead is a beautiful place to train. We’re looking forward to training at these great facilities.”

Gateshead Council cabinet member for culture, Cllr Linda Green, said: “The pre-games training camp is giving Gateshead residents, students and local sports clubs the opportunity to be inspired by the London 2012 Olympic Games right here.”

Lewis Pendleton, head of sport at Gateshead College, said: “We feel honoured to have these world-class athletes using the facilities and training at our Academy for Sport.
