Team GB announced their athletics squad on Tuesday July 3 with numerous Tyne and Wear competitors missing out.

Gateshead pair JJ Jegede and Chris Kirk, as well as Aly Dixon from Sunderland were among them.

Cram said: “It will be a horrible day for some, something they have dreamt about for such a long time.

He pointed to the high standards Team GB ask for, which is higher than the international standard, and poor weather as factors in some athletes failure.

The ‘Jarrow Arrow’ trains Laura Weightman who has made the squad and does not have much sympathy for those that have not.

He said: “They have known for a long time what was needed and the good athletes have taken care of business.”
