Fellow Gateshead jumper JJ Jegede also missed out on selection, as well as Sunderland runner Aly Dixon.

Three athletes from Tyne and Wear made the GB Athletics squad - Stacey Smith, Nick McCormick and Ross Murray.

1500m runner Laura Weightman, who is trained by Sunderland’s Steve Cram, also made the squad.

Kirk knew he had not jumped far enough in trials at Birmingham on Saturday June 23.

He will now turn his attention to his personal training business CK Elite and qualifying for 2014 Commonwealth games.

He said: “It is upsetting, I have trained for four years all leading up to the Olympics.

“I could be a typical athlete and sit here and cry about it but life is too short, you get on with it.”
