Both players were at the school hoping to raise the profile of the sport in the region.

It is hoped their visit will spur an interest in hockey ahead of the Olympics this year.

Pinner and Dixon took the kids through the basics of the game before the pupils took shots at international goalkeeper Pinner.

Both players hope to be involved in the 26-man hockey squad that will attempt to emulate their predecessors in 1988 who won Olympic gold.

Pinner told Sky Tyne and Wear: “Meeting the England hockey goalkeeper when I was young spurred me on in the sport and made me want to make it.

“Maybe if we can come into schools and show them that hockey is an Olympic sport they might go on to choose to play it.”
