281112 UGC: North Tyneside to become a film set

'Young stars make it BIG at the Spanish City!'

The Spanish City and its surrounding areas will become home to a team of 150 young film-makers and actors from across the region.

Pre-production of The Big Film is currently underway and production is scheduled to take place in July 2013. Set in Cullercoats, the film will explore the transition of this seaside town, from a small fishing village to a hub of culture and tourism with the arrival and construction of The Spanish City resort in Whitley Bay during the early 1900's. Bringing to life a colourful history of the resort and its surrounding areas, the film will include stories of the Spanish Toreadors from Hebburn, and of the Cullercoats fishermen and women whose lives were entangled in local the fishing community.

ACT 2 CAM, the North Shields based production company, have been teaching young film-makers and actors, aged 8-18, to work both on-screen and behind the camera since 2008. The Big Film project has been developed through weekly film-making workshops, held at the Linksill Centre in North Shields.

Those involved in the making of The Big Film are also researching into the heritage of North Tyneside, with particular emphasis on its local fishing community. The film company is asking for local residents to get involved by sending in their stories, photographs, songs, and any other information that will help make the film historically accurate.

Local historical landmarks will provide the setting for the production and, with the Spanish City currently undergoing regeneration, it seems there couldn’t be a more appropriate time for such an exciting project, created by young people.

The Big Film aims to engage young people with the heritage of their local area and also to create a community of young filmmakers from the region.  With the film industry contributing £4.6bn a year to the economy, it is essential that any young young person with a passion to work in the industry is equipped with the skills, confidence and the best possible opportunities to do so.

ACT 2 CAM is open to creating links with organisations wishing to be involved with The Big Film, and we are also open for applications from any young person aged 8-18 interested in working either on-screen or behind the camera. All enquiries should be made directly to  info@act2cam.com, or by calling 0191 270 4255.
