One of our regular site users alerted us to the apparent comment from a Sunderland fan during the match at the Stadium of Light.
It could allegedly be seen in footage broadcast on Sky Sports 1.
We passed details of the allegation on to Northumbria Police so they could investigate.
Chief Supt Steve Neill said: "We have received a report of racist language being used at the Sunderland versus Newcastle game.
"Northumbria Police will not tolerate racism in any form and enquiries into the report are being carried out."
