A man from Washington on Wearside has been arrested after racist comments were posted on Facebook.
Northumbria Police say the comments were aimed at a North East professional footballer, but have not yet released the name of the victim.
Several sources are reporting that the abuse may have been directed at Newcastle's Shola Ameobi.
A 43-year-old man was arrested overnight on Thursday October 18 on suspicion of racial harrassment.
He has been bailed until November 28.
The comment has been removed from Facebook.
