A paranoid schizophrenic who tied up a female escort and repeatedly raped her in a hotel room has been detained indefinitely.
David Roderick, 35, subjected his 22-year-old victim to a terrifying ordeal, which lasted for a total of nine and half hours over the New Year period in 2011.
The victim's nightmare only ended after her husband reported her missing.
Police arrived and found her at The Royal Station Hotel in Newcastle city centre in a very distressed state.
Roderick was arrested at the scene and later detained in a mental health unit.
At Newcastle Crown Court Recorder Ben Nolan branded the 35-year-old a significant danger to the public.
He said: "These were extremely grave offences. Your victim was 22-years-old, she was a prostitute.
"She visited you in a hotel room you had taken for the purposes of having sex.
"Within a short period of time she felt very uncomfortable in your presence. She no longer wanted to offer you sexual services.
"After that, you effectively imprisoned her. You refused to let her go, took her mobile phone away from her and a little later you tied her up."
The court heard how the victim had arrived at the hotel at around 7pm on New Year's Eve 2011.
She had become concerned after Roderick refused to tell her what services he wanted from her.
Christine Egerton, prosecuting, told the court: "She said she was going to ring her agency.
"She went to get her mobile phone but he stood up and took her phone from her. At this point she began to get scared.
"She said she wanted to go and that he could take his money back."
However, the court heard Roderick grabbed hold of the woman and put the bolt on the hotel room door.
He began to tie her arms up with a scarf and also used rope to tie her legs together.
He demanded that she call him “master" and told her that he had "waited 20 years to do this."
The court heard that the woman made repeated attempts to persuade Roderick to let her go, but he replied that he did not know if he could trust her.
Roderick, of Chestnut Hill, Carlisle, pleaded guilty to four counts of rape, one count of assault by penetration and one count of false imprisonment.
Recorder Nolan sentenced him to an indefinite hospital order.
Robert Adams, defending, said: "He has a history of mental illness and bizarre behaviour on his part. These are extremely serious offences."
Recorder Nolan said: "You are in my judgement a very dangerous man. It would be a very long haul before you are regarded as having been successfully treated."
Roderick was ordered to sign the sex offenders register and was also prevented from working with children.
