Gateshead Mum Hopes For Publishing Deal As ‘50 Shades Of Chav’ Proves Online Hit

A Gateshead mum has proven an internet sensation with her ‘chav’ version of the bestselling novel Fifty Shades of Grey.

36-year-old Mel Dutton from Gateshead started posting chapters of her ’50 Shades of Chav’ on Facebook and has since gained more than 2,000 followers.

The single mum of five has been overwhelmed by the interest her writing has created and now hopes it may lead to a publishing deal.

She said: “It was only meant to be a laugh really. I didn’t think anything like this would happen because of it.

“It started with me posting status updates on Facebook that turned into stories.

“It was a hot, humid Saturday nite and that could only mean one thing...a few bottles of Lambrini from Costcutters...I'd got a loan off the provi on Wednesday so i was gonna treat my Barry to a crate of Stella. I'd dug out my whitest grey bra especially for the occasion...It was Barry's birthday. I'd treat him to a new knuckle duster cos the old bill stil had his old one...It wasnt long before I sensed his nike air max booting the front door like a crazed sycopath. he was too drunk to get his key in the door...He fell with grace in a heap of his own vomit mumbling promises of sweet love and double money off the social this friday cos it was a bank holiday monday nxt week.everything was falling into place."

“It’s all taken from real life, people I know on the estate. I think a lot of humour and wit is taken from life experiences. You’ve got to laugh otherwise you’d cry.

“I’ve had a lot of positive feedback on my Facebook page and I just can’t believe it really.

“A couple of publishers have been in touch so we’ll see what happens from here. I don’t want to get my hopes up but it’s all good so far.”

Mel is not the only author to produce a work entitled '50 Shades of Chav', there is another version available online by Blackburn-based writer Matt Finney.
