Newcastle boss Alan Pardew says the club are "working hard" to bring somebody in when the transfer window opens in January.
The club have been linked with a move for Marseille's French international striker Loic Remy, with Pardew and his backroom staff reportedly making contingency plans in case Demba Ba's £7.5m release clause is activated.
Pardew said: "It is very hard to get (a deal) across the line. We've got good guys here, Derek Llambias, Lee Charnley and Graham Carr, and they are working hard to get somebody over the line."
