The Times' North East correspondent George Caulkin says it was vital that Newcastle United kept hold of Demba Ba after his contract release clause expired.
Having signed on a free transfer last summer, Ba had a reported £7.5m release clause written into his contract.
Amid rumoured interest from Russian side Rubin Kazan and Turkish giants Galatasaray, Ba stayed at Newcastle past the deadline on July 31 and, should he choose to leave the club in the future, his transfer fee will now be up for negotiation.
