Steve Harper is used to diving as a goalkeeper but ahead of a return to preseason training he attended a charity event for the Percy Hedly Foundation's 'Reason To Swim' campaign.
The challenge is to see how many miles the people of the North East can collectively swim in one week.
Harper took part in the event, swimming his mile alongside children from Northern Counties School.
It is the first in the series of 'Reason To' events run by the charity and was organised by Great British triathlete Joanna Reid.
Harper is about to enter into his 20th season with Newcastle United.
He has spent almost all of that time as the second-choice 'keeper behind Shay Given and is now vying for a first team place with Dutch international Tim Krul.
But, Harper says he hopes to be an active member of the squad next season with the extra demands of Europa League football.
