Sky Tyne and Wear joined fans watching the game on Sky Sports at Shark Club on Barrack Road.
Yohan Cabaye’s third minute goal gave Newcastle a great start against Sunderland but it would not last.
Cheick Tiote was sent off after 25 minutes for a rash challenge on Steven Fletcher to leave United with 10 men for over an hour.
Sunderland struggled to break down Newcastle’s defence until captain Fabricio Coloccini was forced off with tight calf muscles.
Five minutes before the final whistle John O’Shea’s header was deflected in off Demba Ba to rescue a point for Sunderland.
After the game Newcastle manager Alan Pardew hailed his side for their “magnificent effort.”
He said: “We said to the players before the game how important it is for the fans and we have shown how important it is to us today, the players.
“An hour with ten men you could just tell we started to lose legs and could not hold onto the ball in that last period.
“If we could have seen it out it would have been one of the greatest victories ever here.”
