O’Brien scored the winner from a free kick when Newcastle won 2-1 at Roker Park in 1992.
The Irishman is now first team coach at Hibernian in Edinburgh, so Sky Tyne and Wear used their pitch at Easter Road for the reconstruction.
O’Brien has fond memories of Wear-Tyne derbies, scoring at Roker Park with a cheeky chip in 1991 to earn Newcastle a 1-1 draw.
But the free kick in 1992 is the one most fans remember him for.
O’Brien said: “I was always going to take it but there was a few lads around that were a little bit over confident.
“Especially John Beresford, but he is only small so I told him to step away because I was going to take it.”
After the ball sailed into the top left corner, O’Brien ran to the jubilant Newcastle supporters and his Dad.
He said: “I remember exactly where they were sitting so I decided to run to that corner just out of pure joy really.”
