The versatile 28-year-old sustained the problem after an awkward landing in Thursday's Europa League qualifier against Atromitos.
Taylor on Friday afternoon underwent a scan and the assessment confirmed the worst news for the player and Newcastle.
A statement read: "Ryan Taylor will be ruled out for several months after suffering a knee injury during Thursday's Europa League qualifier against Atromitos."
The statement added: "Everyone at club wishes the popular player well in his recovery from the injury."
Taylor said on Twitter he was "devastated" with the injury, but is determined to be back in action soon.
He said: "I won't lie down and feel sorry for myself, I will come back fitter and stronger."
