Newcastle earned a 1-1 draw with Atromitos in the Europa League Fourth Qualifying Round first leg, in their first game of European football in five years.
With a Premier League match against Chelsea in less than 48 hours' time, Newcastle boss Alan Pardew made nine changes from the side that beat Spurs 2-1 on the opening day of the season.
Summer signings Vurnon Anita and Gael Bigirimana were given starts in midfield, and Steve Harper made his first appearance in goal for more than a year.
Newcastle started brightly, but went a goal down after 24 minutes. Nikola Beljic played the ball in from the left wing, and after James Tavernier was caught out of position, Denis Epstein cut inside and opened the scoring.
The visitors immediately set about an equaliser, and it came on the stroke of halftime.
Ryan Taylor's 25-yard freekick beat the wall and found the corner to give his side a valuable away goal.
Alan Pardew brought another of his summer signings on in the second half, Romain Amalfitano making his debut as both teams seemed content with a 1-1 draw.
And 17-year-old Adam Campbell became Newcastle's youngest ever player in a European game when he replaced Papiss Cisse in the game's closing stages.
With minutes to go Atromitos could have scored a winner, but Konstantinos Giannoulis put his shot wide.
