The France international joined the Black Cats on a free transfer from Tottenham last week to improve Martin O'Neill's forward options ahead of the new campaign.
The 34-year-old, who made his debut as a substitute in Saturday's Premier League draw at Arsenal, is someone who Cattermole believes can bring a lot of qualities to the squad.
The midfielder told the club's official website: "Louis has got great experience, you could see that even before the game, talking to the lads in the dressing room.
"He'll be great for us. Coming on and holding the ball up for us helped because I thought we got deeper and deeper. I think he'll be a great signing for us.
"We've got experience through the team with the likes of John O'Shea and Carlos Cuellar, Titus Bramble and Matt Kilgallon. All of them are big talkers."
