The Magpies were able to build on a bright start last season to spend much of the campaign challenging for UEFA Champions League qualification.
They ultimately missed out on a place at European football's top table, but they are looking forward to bringing continental competition back to St James' Park.
Replicating, or bettering, their achievement is now the target for 2012/13, but Ameobi appreciates that hitting that target will be difficult.
Competition for places is fierce in the upper reaches of the division and the Magpies know they will need to raise their game again if they are to cement their standing among the elite.
Ameobi told The Journal: "It's certainly going to be really difficult to replicate what we did last season.
"Just look at teams such as Liverpool and Chelsea - I can't see them doing as badly this time in terms of where they finished in the league last season, so we are going to have to raise the bar again.
"If we did manage to do that, for me, it would mean finishing in a European spot again this season.
"Certainly, as I look back at my career with Newcastle, to do that this time would be our biggest ever achievement."
