The fullback told Sky Tyne and Wear: "From an ex-players point of view I think he should fight for his place. I hope he stays. He looked pretty good towards the end of the season.
"Money talks in football terms. I think Andy should seriously look at what he has got to offer and how he feels about the club.
"And if he feels that things are not going his way and the club might be leaning towards other players then it might be time to look at somewhere else."
Carroll's return to Tyneside is likely to come down to money, with Liverpool understood to be open only to a permanent transfer despite the 23-year-old's determination to prove himself at Anfield.
Newcastle made a loan offer with an option to buy their former player, but the Reds are keen to recoup as much as possible of the £35million they handed over to in January last year.
Newcastle and Liverpool's respective valuations remain considerably apart.
As revealed by Sky Tyne and Wear, Carroll would be open to a loan move to Newcastle, but had concerns about how the fans might react to him.
But the response from fans on Tyneside to a potential move seems largely enthusiastic.
