Anton Fink’s ninth minute goal was the only difference between the sides.
Both new signings Romain Amalfitano and Gael Bigirimana featured with French midfielder Amalfitano playing the full game.
Newcastle were without Tim Krul, Hatem Ben Arfa and Yohan Cabaye who are on extended leave after Euro 2012.
Papiss Cisse and Steven Taylor also missed the game but Demba Ba came off the bench in the second half.
Chances came and went for captain Mike Williamson, Sammy and Shola Ameobi and Haris Vuckis, but the German side held on for the win.
Alan Pardew’s side next travel to French Ligue 2 side AS Monaco to continue their preparations for the new season.
