Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew admits the club's recent track record in the transfer market might be making life more difficult as they target new signings this summer.

The Magpies have landed the likes of Cheick Tiote, Yohan Cabaye and Demba Ba at knock-down prices in recent seasons, and then seen their respective values escalate rapidly.

Tiote, for example, cost just £3.5million when he joined the club from FC Twente during the summer of 2010, while Cabaye's fee was just £4.8million a year later.

However, despite a series of early approaches this time around, the club are yet to make a major breakthrough with selling clubs playing hard-ball, although they were poised to remedy that situation on Friday as they neared agreement with Lille for full-back Mathieu Debuchy.

Asked if Newcastle may be finding themselves victims of their own success, Pardew replied: "Possibly, possibly, but the market dictates, really.

"It's all well and good a club asking for an unrealistic figure, but the bottom line is that the price will be the price.

"You have to be patient in the market sometimes to get the man that you want. Nine times out of 10, the two owners get together and it all becomes very realistic.

"But up until that point, it gets a bit cloudy."

The transfer policy which has served Newcastle so well is based on sticking to their valuation of a player and driving as hard a bargain as possible, and it has paid handsome dividends to date.

But despite their best efforts since the end of the campaign, they have so far managed to sign only youngsters Romain Amalfitano and Gael Bigirimana.

Twente swiftly priced striker Luuk de Jong out of a move to Tyneside when they placed a £16million price tag on his head.

Pardew has an interest in Blackburn's out-of-contract Junior Hoilett, but the club's wage ceiling may prove problematic.

Nevertheless, the manager remains confident of improving his squad significantly, although insists his spending will once again be shrewd and targeted.

He said: "I don't envisage too many coming in because I have got some great young players who have not seen a lot of football.

"We are going to be leaning on Haris Vuckic and [Shane] Ferguson and Sammy Ameobi a lot more than we did last year, Mehdi [Abeid], who hasn't really played here too much, so those extra games, I am looking forward to because we have got a great under-belly of young players here who need games.

"I don't really want to bring in experienced players just to make my squad bigger, I just want us to be a tight ship, and we will utilise everybody we have at the club."
