Danny Guthrie branded his decision to join Premier League new-boys Reading a 'no brainer' after his contract at Newcastle United ran out.

The 25-year-old former Liverpool trainee had found his chances on Tyneside limited following the arrival of Yohan Cabaye and Cheick Tiote.

And although a number of clubs were chasing the midfielder's signature, Guthrie admits his mind was made up within minutes of meeting boss Royals Brian McDermott.

"As soon as I met the manager and (director of football) Nick Hammond my mind was made up - it was a no-brainer," said Guthrie.

Excited

"Everything just fell into place rather quickly and I soon knew that this was the club that I wanted to play for. It feels brilliant, it's a great honour and I'm excited.

"I saw the team play last year and I was impressed. It's a fantastic family club which is well run. It's really exciting to be part of something special.

"We're all gearing up to get ready back into training so it's exciting times. My aims are to play well, do my best for Reading.

"The Premier League is where everyone wants to be so the challenge this season will be to make sure we're still in there. I just want to do well and do my bit. I class myself as an experienced player and I ask more of myself each year."
