The highly-rated Brazil-born player has long thought to have been a target for the Magpies, but interest appeared to have cooled recently.
However, the 24-year-old, whose full name is Douglas Franco Teixeira, apparently failed to turn up for training at his club, and United's managing director Derek Lambias, who was in Holland for discussions over other FC Twente targets such as Luuk De Jong, reportedly took the opportunity to snap him up for a figure believed to be around £5m.Douglas is one of the most highly-rated defenders in the Eridivise, and while he has never gained national honours for the country of his birth, is tipped to be capped for Holland now that he has been granted Dutch citizenship.
