The former Newcastle and England midfielder was in Newcastle to see the unveiling of the Sir Bobby Robson statue.
He said: “I’m doing really really well, I’m getting over my problems, I’m 17 months now and I’ve done longer.
“Everything is going well, I couldn’t wish for a better time in my life.”
“I get up and do things I like doing, I go to the gym, I do a bit of fishing and also do some work.”
As well as all that he also noticed his hometown club Dunston UTS have reached the FA Vase final.
He said: “It’s great for the town, it’s great for the village and hopefully they can come back with the FA Vase."
Gascoigne, who played at Wembley for England and Tottenham, had some advice for the Dunston players.
He said: "Try and soak it up, that is from the minute you wake up until the end of the game because it is not very often you get to play at Wembley."
He sees Dunston's success as part of a wider feel good factor around Tyneside in 2012.
He said: "You have got Sir Bobby here, you have got Newcastle flying for the Champions League you've got the FA Vase coming next week.
"So if you say the town is buzzing, it actually is."
