New Newcastle Falcons head coach Peter Russell says he joined the club to further his ambitions.

Russell joins the side from Hawke's Bay in New Zealand.

Russell guided Hawke's Bay to three successive Air New Zealand Cup semi-finals between 2007 and 2009 - and although they finished eighth in 2010 he guided them to the second tier ITM Championship title last year.

New director of rugby Dean Richards is due to start with the Falcons in mid August after serving a three-year ban following his involvement in the 'bloodgate' scandal and will be in charge for the Falcons' pre-season friendly with Edinburgh on Friday August 17.
