The visitors held a 16-10 lead at half time thanks to tries from Ben Karilis, Max Wiper and Richard Varkulis in answer to Robin Peer's and Mike Mitchell's tries for Thunder.
Craig Calvert grabbed the first of his two tries to put 'Haven 10 points ahead leaving Thunder chasing throughout the second half.
Ryan Clarke scored a try for Gateshead but Calvert went over and a try for Andreas Bauer put the result beyond any doubt.
Clarke kept his composure to score a penalty with the last kick of the game to give Thunder a bonus point for finishing within 12 points of their opponents.
