England's World Cup qualifier against Poland had to be called off after heavy rain had left the Warsaw pitch unplayable.

It was the first time an England match had been called off due to the weather since 1979.

One man who was also denied the chance to represent his country that night was Josh Gillies.

The Gateshead midfielder was in the England 'C' squad for their match in Durres to take on Albania.

The 22-year-old was denied the chance to win his second cap when the game was called off just hours before kick-off, due to a waterlogged pitch.

Gillies said: "When we arrived the weather was fine, but once we got to the ground, the rain came down heavy and the dressing rooms were flooded.

"It's disappointing not to get that second cap, but if I can keep up my form with Gateshead, I am confident I will stay in the England 'C' squad."
