The Manchester side took a sixth minute lead when Scott Spencer’s close-range effort beat Adam Bartlett.
Bartlett then saved a penalty from Spencer.
Josh Gillies then struck his third goal of the season after 34 minutes to ensure Ian Bogie’s side left with a point.
Gateshead could have won their first game in five but James Curtis saw his effort hit the cross-bar.
The draw leaves Gateshead 11th and next face Macclesfield on October 9.
