West Side Story At The Sage Gateshead

A brand new full scale production of West Side Story, directed and choreographed by award-winning Will Tuckett, premieres at The Sage Gateshead this week. Will Tuckett has been given rare permission to create brand new choreography for Bernstein’s timeless classic, working with a vibrant cast of young and emerging artists. The music remains faithful to the original score and is performed by Northern Sinfonia, Orchestra of The Sage Gateshead, conducted by John Wilson. 

Produced by The Sage Gateshead in association with the Royal Shakespeare Company’s (RSC) Open Stages, the musical runs from July 4 to 7 as part of the World Shakespeare Festival, part of London 2012 Festival and the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad.

In addition to a series of talks, workshops, and debates associated with West Side Story, two hundred community performers have spent six months preparing multi-media, pre-show promenade performances inspired by Romeo and Juliet, to frame this production of West Side Story.

West Side Story will be performed at The Sage Gateshead from the 4^th – 7^th July.
