We visit Durham CCC Academy to find out who could follow in the footsteps of Paul Collingwood, Steve Harmison and Graham Onions.
The youth set-up has produced some of England’s best players in recent times and the current Durham senior squad is made up of many local players.
From this season’s academy squad spinner Ryan Buckley has been taking wickets for the senior Durham side and two players have been selected for England under 19s.
Jack Clark and Andy Ireland are now part of the England youth set-up and the latter has great ambition.
He said: “[I want] to play test cricket, probably at the highest level, to make it to the top, if possible.”
Both made half centuries when we filmed the academy play Gateshead Fell in the North East Counties Premier League.
Academy coach John Windows, who helped bring through Liam Plunkett, Scott Borthwick and Ben Stokes, did not want to predict big things for any of the squad just yet.
He said: “We’ve got quite a young side with 15, 16 and 17-year-old lads so to single any of them out for stardom at this early stage would be unfair.”
